File managers and back up

I am in the middle of a mega sort out of datafiles on my hard disk, including :

renaming to allow later retrieval by search
moving into categorised folders.

I have aorund GB of data files now, mostly Office files (eg docs, powerpoint), images and a few videos etc.

When doing this sorting out I am using Powerdesk 6, which is buggy, and crashes occasionally.

When backing up I am using a USB-connected hard disk drive.

My questions are :

1. Is there a better (preferably free!) file manager now?

2. what are people's thoughts on back up of this volume of material?
- buy a bigger USB external drive? If so, how best to make secure ege what encryption / password system ?
- buy a wireless external hard drive?
- use Mozy or similar?
- anything else I am unaware of?

3. any good free back up software out there?

Thanks!!

I use 2xExplorer and FreeCommander click here all the time but the former is getting on a bit and doesn't work well with Vista.
SyncBack click here or Cobian click here for backup
