File Management Conundrum

Last year my laptop had a problem with backing up and saving it became slower and slower and had problems communicating with the external hard drive. I took it to the shop they put a new hard drive in and I upgrade the RAm to 2GB. However the new drive is not partitioned and the Samsung Recovery solution is not working (because of this according to the message window). Also it has continued to save files into "Users" along side the Public and Guest folders. Does this mean that hey ar being saved twice? Or that they are simply mapped into this location as well, How can I check.

My doubt is in part because I am using space up at a pretty alarming rate I have 89GB left of 232GB. I am though, generating Aiff.and Wav. sound files recording music though a Digital Audio Workstation. I need to decide on what sort of storage useage and requirements I have for future decisions on upgrades or replacement! And what size of external hard drive will be necessary for backups

Hope you are able to clear this up for me, Thanks for reading this, Phil
