File history doesn't recognise this drive

I recently bought a computer running Win8. Prior to upgrading to W8.1 I wanted to back up my files. I bought an external hard drive, a Seagate 500GB expansion unit. When I tried to back up my files using MS file history, I got a message 'File history doesn't recognise this drive'. Looking at Google I see I'm not the only one with this problem, which seems to be a fault in the File History program. Does anyone know of a quick fix for this problem, please? Would appreciate any help. BTW, the drive works fine in the 'drag and drop' mode, so I assume the drive itself is OK. Regards, tristar16

Run

services.msc

scroll down to File History and check that it is started, if not then set to manual and click on start.

then retry your backup files.
