File formats for playback of films

What file support should I be looking for on a t.v. to enable me to playback films stored on a USB key. I know that I bought a small tv for the bedroom myself about 12 months ago from Morrisons and found out that it would not playback all newer video files. My son has asked the question because he wants to buy a new tv for his 7 year old.

I am assuming that the 2 most important are AVI and Mp4

Best thing is to ask / find out which TV plays what file formats. Look on the respective web sites for the TV manufacturers of your choice for details. But, as stated, generally AVI and Mp4 are used.
