File descriptions missing

I have one folder which refuses to show the descriptions of its files in both Thumbnail and Filmstrip views. Other folders eg My Documents are fine just this one folder seems to be a rogue. The descriptions are available in all other Views (List, Details, tiles, Icons) but just do not show up underneath the files in Thumbnail and Filnstrip views. Any ideas anyone?
Running XP2.

OK this is even more peculiar, the missing descriptions only apply to those in the top layer of the file (which is called Junk and has always been in the root file of drive C). So if I look at the contents of a file inside the junk folder all the descriptions are there in all views. For fun I copied the entire contents of C:\Junk to D:\ and lo an d behold all views work including the top level files. Delete the old C:\Junk and copy back from D:\ and the same problem still exists with the top level files and folders. Strange huh?

Try holding down Shift when opening the folder.

That's brilliant it works! But why?

It works as a toggle - do it again and the file names will disappear again.
