File associations - how useless can Microsoft get?

I was sent a file with .mdi suffix. I took the option to look on the web for a program to open it and the Microsoft Windows File Associations page tells me File Type: Unknown - Description: Windows does not recognize this file type. It then sends me to ckknow.com which tells me it is an Office Document Imaging File from - whaddya know - Microsoft Office 2003!! A case of left hand not knowing right hand exists perhaps?

Is there such a thing as a filter so I can read this into Office 2000?
