Fibre optic broadband with wi-fi router - Only as fast as router?

I only use wi-fi for my Sky broadband, as the telephone incoming port is in a room we don't use. If I upgrade to a fast fibre optic broadband, would there be any advantage, or would it still be at the old router speed? (Or is a router Wi-Fi speed much greater than even the wi-fi?). This is probably a very simple (and silly) question, but hopefully some of you clever guys out there can advise me on this. Thanks
