A few questions...

Hi,

I just want to ask a few questions.

I had an IBM, failed. I was given another one. Fine until now...

The PC is slow, corrupt files, stop messages and programs are really slow to open. The HDD blinks all the time when even opening Mailwasher.

Is it failing?

Anyway, I have a back-up to a medion external 160Gb HDD, the one on Consumerwatch that was suggested as a good buy.

However, it has been fine other than is it Normal for it to take 1Hr to format it using NTFS?

And why is it only detected in XP as 149.05Gb RAW?

Can I make this larger, this was auto-detected though.

My system is a 2800+, 512Mb DDR, 120Gb IBM Deskstar, Asus FX5600 card and Windows XP Pro.

Thanks.

Run an Hard Disc Program to check the drive. You should get one from the Manufacturer

1 Hour is fine for the formatting.

Search the forum for the two standards of a K/M/G Byte for your 149.05GB. =

Seagate, are a very good name to my mind.

It has an excellent 3D defense system that throws up possible problems before they can turn into a headache.

Not shown any. Wondering about 149.05Gb, not even installed windows to it powerless.

HDD manufacturers use decimal when referring to GB, meaning 1,000,000,000 bytes

windows uses a binary measurement, where a GB contains 1,073,741,824 bytes.

1,073,741,824 divided by 1,000,000,000 = 1.073741824

160(GB) divded by 1.073741824 = 149 GB,

Now...

Installed a brand new HDD, ok...

But do maxtors click when being accessed, a little quieter than a floppy being accessed?

Also, my virus scanner complians all files are read-only. Ugh?

Solved the Antivirus problem.

Anyway, there is one point. The computer seems slugish still.

All drivers the lot.

It is all high quality parts and a good mainboard. Could there be a problem with something else, if so what?

I will check this out more tomorrow, think its my video card being slow?

Anyway, if yuo could all answer the above in your own time, I would be very happy.

Its just, I am SICK of problems.

Thanks for all the help on the Medion HDD. I will leave as so, it works eh?

Regards,
Gareth
