fdisk /mbr

Noticed this on a website the other day, just wanted to know if it is correct, typing fdisk /mbr ( at bootup disk prompt)will fix the Master Boot Record, DOS was before my time.

It depends on what operating system you are running. If it's XP then you should boot into the recovery console from the XP CD and type
FIXMBR. click here

For Win98: there are 2 instances of the Master Boot Record, the one that is in use and a backup copy. Fdisk /mbr overwrites the current MBR with the copy and hopefully gets things working again. Don't use this on a dual-boot PC as these use a special MBR which will be destroyed. click here

You need a Win XP CD or the bootup floppy disk set and to boot from.
