Fax services won't install in XP media centre

I recently bought a PC with XP media centre pre-installed. When I try to install the fax software from control panel/add remove windows components the wizard goes through the installation process and says the fax software has been installed but when I look for the fax console under accessories the fax menu just says "empty" and there's no fax printer available from the print menu.

Any ideas?

Did you have the XP installation disk available?

If you have broadband you would still require a dialup modem to send and receive faxes (you could receive faxes as e-mails, a service which is available from several sources).

Hi Stuart,

No, they don't give you an installation disk these days - however the wizard doesn't ask for one. It says it's configuring the components and then "congratulations - you've successfully installed the software" but then it's not there. I do have a fax/modem connected as well as the cable modem and the fax installation worked fine with the old pc but not this one. I know you can use a third party for faxing but I like things to work the way they're supposed to if possible. I do have an XP Home installation disk and I could get one for XP media centre from ebay if necessary.

Start Menu/Run, type services.msc, is the Fax service listed and running?

  Nick R. 16:43 03 Nov 05

No, it says startup type disabled and whenever I try to change anything from there a pop up box says "this service is marked for deletion"

Try disabling and removing all the fax stuff again, reboot and see if the service is gone, then try another re-install. Check Windows Management Instrumentation service is set to automatic too.

Oh, sorry and the status is "stopping"

  Nick R. 17:10 03 Nov 05

There's no fax stuff to remove as it not installed. When I go back to add/remove windows components the "fax sevices" box has unchecked itself again. I reset WM instrumentation service to automatic and rebooted but still no joy. Oh, and I have checked that I'm logged in as the administrator.

In your Windows folder there should be a file called faxsetup.log - take a look and see if it reveals what's holding things up.

I can't see anything obvious but I'm not really sure what to look for. This is the last page.

Identical to my fax log, which appears to work.
Is there a folder in My Documents called Fax ? Another called in \Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\MSFax ?
