I have too many "Favourites" listed, will they slow my PC down, ie logging on or otherwise ?
Can I remove them "enmasse" ? (all at once, instead of one by one )

No they won't slow your PC down.
Go to start menu/run, type

favorites

press return.
You can manage them with Explorer.

I assume you are using IE7? If so, as far as boot up is concerned, no...It will not slow your pc down.

If you want to remove redundant links as you describe:

Open your favourites folder (you will see "links") and any other folders you have created.

Open each folder, select the first link you want to remove, hold down the CONTROL key and select the next (remember to hold down the CTRL key each time)

When you have all selected, delete them DO NOT DELETE the "Links" folder, but all you have created yourself can be deleted by a right click. delete.

As Brundle says, and then Edit > Select All and Delete if you really want to get rid of them all
