Favicon 'problem'

  Chris the Ancient 17:49 26 Aug 09

Generated a favicon for my website.

Shows OK locally, but not on remote server.

Any thoughts/ideas why?

Make sure the icon is placed in the root directory along with your web pages on the server.

You can also add the follwing line of code in the head section of you're page...

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico">

Maybe me putting the icon in the _images directory has confused things. Apart from that it *looks* about the same.

More experimenting tomorrow as it's not a drop-dead problem.

Relocated the favicon in the public root folder (and changed the header).

Still shows on my local view but not on the remote server.

Still, not a major problem.

that, sometimes, the favicon works in Firefox but not in IE (and vice versa).

As you say, not a major problem - but one of those teasers that exercise the grey matter from time to time :-)

Yup, it's a teaser! Just darned frustrating trying to work out why. Nobody else's favicons 'disappear' that I know of. Even more frustrating when it works in Firefox on my computer; but not in Firefox from the server |0(

As the remote server is run by a friend, I think I shall plonk the problem in his ans see what he makes of it }-))

  Fermat's Theorem 23:38 28 Aug 09

I have put the favicon image in the RES folder, not the root folder from which it works in both Firefox and IE with the following code in the head <link rel="Shortcut Icon" href="res/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />

Maybe this helps?

  Chris the Ancient 10:42 29 Aug 09

... my host server doesn't provision a RES folder that I can see.

When the 3-day weekend is over, I'll put it in the hands of my host.
