Fauly USB Ports - Memory card reader intermittantly working

  agour 16:48 11 Dec 13

I've got a PC that's a few years old now, running a gigabyte GA-X48-DS5 motherboard.

Basically my USB card reader only seems to work intermitantly. I bought a new card reader, and still have the same problem.

The pc sometimes recognizes the card and works fine. Sometimes it only sees it as a USB 1 device. Sometimes it reads the card, but gives an I/O error when I try to copy files.

I've tried multiple SD cards, so I presume the motherboard is at fault.

Is this a pretty common problem, and is there any way to fix it... or do I just need a new motherboard?

Thanks, Paul

Also, all my other USB ports work without any faults. I must have about 5 devices plugged in, and not one has ever failed.

Try the card reader in one of the ports that work OK, also if the port you are connecting it to is USB3 (probably not if your PC is more than a couple of years old), try plugging it into a USB2 port. USB3 ports are coloured blue.
