Faulty NEC laptop

I recently accuired a faulty laptop with a screen that does not fire-up on start up, I have tried to connect to another screen but the screen also does not fire up, my conclusion is that the laptop screen itself is in good condition but could be a problem with the graphic card itself. How do I update drivers if the computer does not show me anything on the screen. Could there be another reason for this. I purchase this computer knowing there was something wrong with the display, but it gives me a buzz of a challenge to open up this machines and try to rectify the problem. I am going to play around with it a bit more but would appreciate if anyone have a better idea why this is caused. Thanks.

If it has onboard graphics you might be looking at a new motherboard , what make and model is it ?
