Faulty hard drive? do I have to format?

  thewasp 19:02 08 Jun 07

I have an additional SATA drive for backup purposes and games etc.

Recently when writing to the drive the computer will reset. Also when I run a disk check it will reset.

Is there anything I can do without formatting and starting again?

Can you try the drive in another PC? If it fails there it's the drive.

Don't have another pc to test, unfortunately.

I did have a intermittent connection problem with the drive power lead a while ago which I think could have caused a write error.

I assume that this drive is installed and working as a Slave to you main drive.

If this is the case you could remove it and stick it in an "USB Enclosure" and use it as an External Drive. If it really is faulty then loss is not huge, as you still have the Enclosure, and you can buy an other second hand drive at the Sunday Market.

Thanks, I'll probably copy everything over to another drive, then format the "faulty" one which may turn out to be OK once reformatted.
