Faulty CD drive ? Sony CRX185E1

  number69 18:52 06 Apr 04

System. Gigabyte GA-7ZXE
AMD Duron 1.3
Windows XP pro
2 x Hard Drives total 110Gb
2X cd drives Goldstar CRD 8322B and a Sony CRX185E1
512Mb memory.
The system will often lock up usually when using the Sony CD drive. Every time that it does when I look in device manager the Sony had disappeared from the listings.
Rebooting will return things back to normal. The problem may occur every time the cd is used or it may work correctly for weeks. I have tried running it as the master drive / the slave drive and cable select. I have tried it with and without xps own recording enabled.
I have tried changing other various settings and using other software ie nero or real player.
It does seam to be most stable with Windows player and worst with Real player.
I have tried uninstalling the various different software programs so that there is only 1 at a time on the system.
Any ideas before I dump it and buy a new cd rom. The frustrating thing is you can change something and every things works correctly so you think you have cracked it.
