Fatal exception OE/GP errors - mmsystem

  bruce 16:19 27 Dec 03

P3 500, running W98SE, 128MB, 8GB HDD.

Starts off with fatal exception OE at 0167:BFF9DFFF, then, intermittently, repeated GP errors in almost every program - Explorer GP fault in module MMSYSTEM.DLL at 0004:00000dbf.

I've seen and checked 138835:
"drivers=mmsystem.dll" line is present in the boot section of System.ini

At least it's
"drivers=mmsystem.dll power.drv"
so I presume that's OK.

Like I say, it's intermittent, but annoying and requires a re-boot each time.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Tried refreshing the Multimedia section in Add/Remove Programs > Windows Setup by removing all, OK'ing and then adding all again, as suggested elsewhere.
Been fine for two days, but just crashed again with same error.
Any other suggestions from anyone?

Scanned, cleaned, updated, scandisked and defragged....also previously f-disked, formatted and clean installed....
but still crashing with same error message, basically with regard to whatever program is being used at the time.
