Failure to repair XP with product recovery disc

  Newuser1542 20:30 31 Jul 03

Windows XP has a corrupted or missing system file.
The recovery disc setup starts by scanning hard ware then the screen goes blank
What do I do next?

Does windows start up for you?

If so, try going to start, run and type in the following command:

sfc /scannow

I have no control at all .
The hard disk appears dead
The recovery disc runs from the CDRom and searches for hard ware and configuration but then nothing happens and I am left with a black screen

I am not sure about it all - does any lights come on the hdd led on the front of the PC? What about the BIOS - when starting the PC does the hdd get mentioned at all?

Try going into the BIOS (setup) and see if the hdd is recognised.

Try connecting your HDD as a slave to someone else's PC - assuming it is readable, you should be able to replace the missing/corrupt file/s.
