Failure to defragment - Windows XP

I have recently installed Windows XP. I can`t get anywhere with defragmenting. Whatever I try I just get a screen with what looks like programming of some sort. I think the file that is opening ends with .msc. Can anyone help please?

Try it this way...

Right-click My Computer, and choose Manage.

On the left hand frame that pops up, there is an entry for Disk defrag - click it.

Next, choose a drive in the right-hand side (e.g. Drive C:)

Then, either click defragment (near the bottom of the frame), or select analyse to see whether your drive actually needs to be defraggged.

How are you trying to defrag your drive? If you are opening a file with a .msc extension, I don't think that is the right way!

Click your Start Button then go to Programmes/Accessories/System Tools. Then click the Disk Defragmenter Button and all should be well.
