Is there any way to get failed hard drives to work again?

No.

Apart from a miracle.

You could install the drive as a slave and see if you can see it through Windows. But a fail is a fail.

How did it fail?

I have a 20gb which had read and write errors and then wouldn't boot up.

And a laptop HD, which wont start up.

If you have a Maxtor HD you can download a test program from their website. You load it to a floppy and it checks it out.

Other HD manufacturers will probably do their own version.

I've used the Maxtor before and it is very good.
