Extremely slow laptop. Continuous HD access

My father has been having problems with his Sony Vaio PCG-FX105K (700MHz, 128MB and Win 2000 Pro) laptop and has asked me to help.

The problem was that the laptop was running extremely slowly, for example, 20 mins to open Internet Explorer, and permanently seemed to be accessing the Hard Drive, even when idle.

I suspected that the computer may have been bogged down with spyware etc so I decided to format the hard drive and reinstall with WinXP Home. This was successfully installed, but the computer still spends a huge amount of time accessing the HD and at times runs very slowly.

This suggests a hardware problem to me. Any ideas anybody?

Also on shutdown, the laptop no longer turns itself off, and I am just left at a blank screen. Help please!

Have you had a look in msconfig to see what software and services are running?
