External storage solution - please help?

Hi all,

I’m very confused about my options for additional storage space. I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop and I'm using an 800GB 3.5" USB HDD with external power supply.

The hard-drive is almost full and I am looking for a new storage solution. Having an external power supply connected is becoming a pain so I was thinking of getting a 2.5" USB HDD. Also the performance of USB 2.0 for an external hard-drive isn’t the best so I was looking at other options. Might a larger internal HDD be a better solution? My laptop is already out of warranty but I’d like to have existing data transferred across as well as my copy of Windows Vista.

I need around 1TB of storage.

Could it be best to buy an eSATA cardbas?
Can anybody suggest a suitable one for my Inspiron?
Would I be able to get an eSATA hard-drive that does not require external power supply or does this not exist?
If not would I be able to get a 4m eSATA cable which would reduce the hindrance of the external power supply.

All suggestions welcomed. Please post links to any suggested products if possible.

Thanks very much for your help,
