External modem problem

I have been setting up a computer for my mother which she inherited from another family member. It is a seven year old Dell computer with an external modem. Whilst trying to register for both Tiscali and then Tesco internet providers we had the same problem. It dialed OK but would not conect giving us various messages about the server being busy.

Is this a modem problem? I doubt whether both providers were busy all day.

It's unlikely to be the modem, this often results from an ISP or modem setup problem. Are you absolutely sure that all your settings have been entered correctly?

If your computer runs a Windows 9x/ME version as I assume your mother's does, you can just copy the ISP item from your dialup networking to hers by using a floppy disc. That would transfer everything except the password that she would use.
