External HDD Caddy

Bought the above (on great advice from here I may add) after having difficulty accessing my HDDi, my laptop picks it p ok but tells me disk needs to be formatted, which is what I didn't want to do.
The disk was formatted NTFS with XP Pro
The original problem was a boot sector fault which I wasn't able to repair, hence the option of trying to access it as an external drive. would it have anyhing to do with the jumper pins? or do I resign myself that I have lost the data?
