External HDD - Best way to clear of old Back-ups

I am giving a spare External HDD to my brother-in-law for his backups and wish to clear my old back-up Folders off it. I am not that fussed that the information is deleted to the Nth degree as it will soon be overwritten by his back-ups.

Deleting them or Formating the Drive are the first two solutions that come to mind.

Are there other ways, and which of them is likely to be the simplest and/or quickest?

Just right click and delete, saves a lot of faffing about.

I'm completely with GANDALF <|:-)> on this.

Hold the Shift Key down when hitting Delete

Hold down the shift key while you press delete and it should by-pass the recycle bin.

I need to learn to type faster. :-)

What would I need to do to make the HDD usable again?

Thats the key with the "Upward Arrow" below Caps Lock, isn't it?
