External HDD

I am buying a new computer with W XP. Three of the slots are taken up with the HDD, DVD drive and CDRW drive, leaving only one free. However, I really wanted a Zip drive plus a second HDD to store an image of the primary HDD. If I have a Zip drive fitted, and connect an external HDD via the USB port, would this work? And is it a practical solution?

Probably best to get an external Zip drive, and mount the HDD internally.

I feel the Zip drive is becoming "old hat" in these days when you can plug a variety of removable memory in to USB. I have a 1Gb Jaz drive but seldom use it now.

I agree with stlucia, would prefer an extra internal HDD and leave the choice of external devices to be decided by what will suit your need best.

When you need to copy large chunks of data an internal device will do it faster than an external one.
