My external Maxtor 200gb containing just photos, music & document bck ups takes hours & hours & hours to defrag (with Norton). In addition, today, it says there is only 35gb free space but I have only used about 44 of just under 200gbs available.

The main C drive has far more on it & only takes about an hour to optimise.

Any ideas?

I suspect the slow defragging is down to having to constantly shuttle data in and out of ram via the, comparatively, slow usb interface rather than just via the motherboard.

or - you could try iObit SmartDefrag from click here

I use it all the time, it defrags quietly in the background, including my 320Gb external usb drive, very quick and very easy to use. As I say, it runs all the time in the background, keeping drives fully defragged at all times once the initial defrag has been done. Even the initial defrag only took about 30 minutes - and I have approx 180Gb of stuff on my drives.
