external HD

I have Western Digital My book 250GB and only use it to store pictures, videos etc but this only maybe once a month or more. In view of this, is it necessary to keep the HD connected to the computer all the time ? Can't I connect it only when I have something to backup or store ? Maybe this will make it last longer, I thought. What do you think ?

Mine is permanently connected but turned off except when I want to use it. There is no particular need to keep them plugged in.

Mine does not seem to be able to be permanantely connected but turned off. Do you mean just unplugged from the USB ?

You can disconect it no problem, it will do no harm. When you need to use it again simply plug it back in and it will be recognised in windows.

I'll confirm that. I have one permanently connected but only switched on once a week when I do a back-up. Why shorten its life by running it all the time?
