how can i get the pc to see my external drive

Have you tried it in all your USB sockets, as some are powered and some are not depending on the setup that you've got.

How is the Drive powered?
If it is relying on USB your PSU may not be up to it.
External is best.
Go to
Start/Control Panel/Admin tools/Computer Management/storage/disk management
And see it is shown there.
The disk has also to be formatted to the system you are using.-NTFS for 2000/XP/Vista.
32 bit for other systems
[32 bit can also be read by NTFS- so could be considered 'universal' ]especially if you intend to use it on other machines/systems.

Refresh USB Ports
In device manager Uninstall EVERYTHING under the heading USB,
reboot the PC let XP find and install new hardware.
Your equipment should now be recognised.

Hi fruitbat, did this before & it did not work its show up unknown, what eles could it be?

try closing down windows, shut down pc,remove power lead and all peripherals,so no power to pc at all.
leave for 30 mins
reconnect all and start up pc.

also could possibly be drive letter allocation problem
