I want to purchase an external harddrive but looking through a couple of sites they are mostly connected via USB2 or firewire. My comp only has USB1 will they still work? And has anyone got any recommendations on what make to buy. Thanks.

you can buy a internal pci usb card to update to usb2 click here

You can get a USB 2.0 card for under £10 click here assuming that you have a spare PCI slot.

Not a user of external HDD so I don't know if you can get USB 1.0/1.1 models.

Hi !!
I had the same problem with one of my towers running 98 SE. I replaced the USB card with a USB 2 bought a 80 GB Maxtor HD and a seperate case put them together and I now have a 29GB 2x32GB and a 16GBall in FAT and all running merrily from the same tower.

I made my own with a external case from Computer fair £22 and a 200gb Seagate drive from Ebuyer it's a USB2 but works OK on my Win98se comp at USB1.1 but slower than on the other USB2 comps that I have
