External Hard Drives Slow?

I am thinking of buying an external HDD from backing up and transporting video files, etc.

There appear to to be two types, Firewire and USB2

In terms of operation speed, I assume that any bottle-neck would be at the connection rather than the drive.

So, how do USB2 and Firewire compare to ATA100 in terms of speed, and can I use an external device to capture video from a DV camera?

Also, can a USB2 drive be connected to a PC via USB1 (I know it would much slower, but it could be useful for data transport)

Thanks,

Nick

USB2 and Firewire are amply fast enough for anything you could want. Yes you can connect USB2 to USB1 but it will drop to USB1 speed.
