External Hard drives

I am interested in getting an ext hd and am unsure whether to get a dedicated one or to get a caddy and separate hard drive/s.
Is it possible to copy the contents of c drive to external drive and then copy to another PC.

Copying the contents of C: drive would almost certainly violate copyright/licence laws with regard to the operating system and applications you already have installed on the first computer. External hard drives are useful for backing up of data (personal documents, images etc.).

The advantage of a dedicated one is that it'll be plug and play (if you use Win XP). I'm very happy with my Maxtor, which is connected through firewire.

D.i.y. with a caddy can be cheaper though.
