i,v often read that sooner or later most of us will get hard drive breakdown with the advice to back up to cd/floppy all important files/data/music/photos etc.is it possible to put windows xp(pre installed)on an external hard drive for just an emergency ?,if so how ?.

I think what you mean is can I make a copy of my installation and store it externally for copying back if needed.

You can purchase an external Hard Drive, then buy either Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image. Of these two programs I prefer Acronis.

You can then use either of these programs to Clone or Back-Up your HD.

I have a Maxtor One Touch USB External drive + Acronis. This is an excellent drive, well built, has it's own power supply and a on/off switch at the rear.

If you Clone, then that creates a mirror image of your HD. Whereas Back-Up creates copies of your files etc.

If you buy an External Drive, then you will need a USB(2) connection on your PC, USB(1) would be too slow in transferring data.

Hope that helps.
