External Hard Drive won't write

  Matt.tt 10:01 02 Aug 06

I have brought an extrnal Hard drive and have put it onto my windows xp laptop (Which works fine). I now would like to put it through a usb hub, and then onto a windows 2000 laptop. When I do this, I can open it up fine, but once a start adding, or deleting data from it it comes up with loads of error messages, which basiclly say that it cannot write to \Device\Harddisk2\systemvolume. Any data may be lost.

Can anyone please tell me how to stop this happening.

Is it a powered usb hub, if not the drive might not be drawing enough power.

As jimv7 implies, the hub power is your problem. Frankly, any use of a hub for this sort of work is dangerous, simply because the power fluctuations can cause corruption, or worse. However, if you must use a hub, make sure its powered and that nothing else is connected to the hub at the same time.
