External hard drive not recognised

  baa 19:34 31 Dec 09

I have a toshiba external hard drive which my computer is not recognising. It has all my photos on so I really do want to get it working.
I have tried removing and replacing the plugs to no avail. The hard drive does not make any sounds when switched on, but power is getting to it as the light comes on. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Does it show in device manager?
or any sign when you plug in the USB port.

What operating system are you using?
Have you tried it on another machine?
Can you check the internal connections on the drive?

Thanks fruit bat
The drive is not working, it is making a clicking sound as if it is trying to start. I will have to see if I can get at the connections inside the drive

"it is making a clicking sound as if it is trying to start"

drive heads hitting platters

you will be lucky to recover any thing as it sounds like a physical failure.

no its trying to read the disc, mbr corruot by not uninstalling it correctly. It needs removing from Caddy and fitting tower so it can be hek using a floppy or usb stick with drive check software
