External hard drive issues

I have an 80gb Freecom Classic external hard drive and recently I've had trouble trying to access certain files on it. I have about 40gb of music on it and the majority of it appeared to be unaffected, but when my pc tries to access certain files it freezes and then I either have to reboot or disconnect the hard drive to continue. I have tried to run chkdsk, but it will get only so far through the scan and then freeze.

Are there any applications i could use to help recover the files that i can't seem to access is there another way I could go about it?

Thanks for your help.

Have you tried in safe mode?

thanks jak_1.

i tried safe mode, but exactly the same. It scans about a third of the disk and then freezes. Have to reboot or disconnect the hard drive to get out of it.
