External hard drive detection

Hi, I've been given a couple of IDE hard drives that supposed to be OK and I can hear them winding up but sometimes the computer detects them and sometimes it doesn't. I'm connecting them via a USB and I've tried various ports but it's still iffy. I want to use them as portable back ups so I don't want to try installing them. I'm running Win 7 ultimate. Any help would be good, thanks.

Make sure the IDE drive jumpers are set to Master it wont detect the drive otherwise.

No joy, it's detecting a USB to ata or atapi bridge, and properties says the is a mass storage device there but I cannot get into it and it is not showing up in the drives.

Can you see it in disk management?

It may require formatting and a drive letter assigning.

OK, so I tried it again and this time it has appeared in drives, all I did was turn it off and on again. Thanks for the help Fruitbat, if it stops again it's going in the bin.

Format them and run chkdsk on them before using to store any data.
