External Hard Drive for back up question.

Following a disasterous system crash in Win Xp I am considering purchasing an external hard drive so I dont lose everything following a crash. Questions:
1. Do they come with back up utility?
2. What in your opinions is the best back up software to use?

What I would like to do is restore my system with the click of a mouse button rather than refomatting then reinstalling everything including drivers etc. I would welcome any thoughts.

I'm using a package called "Drive Image 2003", does the job perfectly. It replaces the partition and system in the event of a serious problem.
