External Hard-drive

I already have two Hard-drives inside my machine but recently was given a new(ish) 8.4G one as well. Could I use this as an external back-up device? I have a fire-wire card (my USB's are taken up). I read in another thread that you can get some kind of 'caddy' for an external drive. Can this be done? Would it work as a back-up device?

If you have a sparebay on the front of your PC you could put in a removable hard drive.

The external caddys are about £50 (alaminum). You need a firewire caddy if your usb ports are used up, but not sure if regular hd goes with it or have to use firewire hd.

Thanks to all. It doesn't really look worth the money to get this to work.
