External hard drive

The hard drive on my Toshiba laptop was getting very full so I have transferred the individual folders in My Documents to an external hard drive. The question now is - when I want to save a new file the Save As function still looks to My Documents on the laptop's hard drive: how do I get it automatically to look to the new external hard drive?

Can you not browse through D: (if that is your external) to My Documents (on D:) to requisite folder?

OK VoG's idea is better and automatic.

But do you need constant access to all these files? Also the external is inconvenient to carry around (compared with no external).

Either keep your external as back up and keep C: My Documents for current files and/or back up less frequently used files to CD or DVD RW. So they can be accessed as required.

Thanks. That link looks very useful. I'll follow it up.
