Thanks everyone for your advice on my previous post re this. I am a little confused was going to make one up myself from ebuyer but when I checked some it didn't say whether they were usb2 or not, does this matter as pre-made external drives state usb2 and are more expensive.

USB2 will be an advantage if you transfer large amounts of data (such as in a backing up procedure). Any caddy you get should be USB2 to ensure ease of use.

If you are looking at the Belkin cases that ebuyer are selling, yes, they are USB2 - I have several of them.

I have a Belkin which is also USB2.
Will take hard drives and optical drives.

sorry but I don't quite understand, does the drive I buy have to be usb2 or does the caddy perform that?

No it does not have to be USB2 but the 2 version transfers information a lot faster.
The electronics in the caddy determine which speed it runs at.
