External hard disk wont accept large files

I Have just bought a philips external hard disk drive. it has 75gb of space but wont let me transfer files of 4.5gb. i have sucessfully transfered a file of 1.3 gb but it says 4.5gb is to large to fit on the drive. can anyone tell me what is going on, or what setting i have to change to solve this problem.

Sounds like it is formatted as FAT32. You could convert it to NTFS click here
