external hard disk

Hi all,
Ive got a external hard disk 320gb plug abd play I plug into my usb port and windows says this is a high speed unit. I plug it into my high speed usb2 port and the computer will not reconise it.
I have looked through previous threads and one says that any thing above,I think, 120gb windows will not reconise it.
The unit is from PC world and the make is a maxtor

Can anybody help ???????????

It will if SP2 is installed.

Refresh USB Ports
In device manager Uninstall EVERYTHING under the heading USB,
reboot the PC let XP find and install new hardware.
Your equipment should now be recognised.

If you right click on the drives icon in My Computer and then go to Properties, you will see whether the drive is formatted NTFS or FAT.

NTFS is the newer filing system used in the latest Microsoft products.

New Technology Filing System ( NTFS ) has superseded ( FAT ) File Allocation Table of the way to store files. Hard drives are formatted in either way to run windows and the programs.
