external hard disk

my brother bought an 80Gb 2.5" external hard disk
for my pc.
I transferred 74.Gb and have 37.9 Mb left. But
next to total size it says 74.5Gb. Where has the
rest of the 5.5Gb gone??? Can someone explain?

Thank you!!

It is because manufacturers use 1000 bytes for a KB when in fact it is 1024 bytes.

So your 80GB was never 80GB

80,000,000,000,000 /1024 /1024/ 1024 = 74.5 ish
