External DVD or HDD

I have an external DVD writer which I bought to use with my old laptop. I now have a desktop with a built in DVD writer and DVD ROM. However, the external DVD writer is a dual layer so I am going to put it in the desktop (and have 2 DVD writers and remove the DVD ROM).

My question, therefore, is: Can I use the external housing of the DVD writer for an external hard drive? I would like to have a separate external hard drive for backups and this would save a bit of cash.

The external enclosure has the power leads and the IDE leads but no fan. Would this be a problem?

Many thanks

The external hd's that I have both have fans, you could do a google for ext hd enclosures and see whether what comes up have fans.

Yes, looks like they do need a fan. Never mind.

Cheers for the help.
