External DVD??

I am in the process of upgrading my daughters PC.

After installing the new hard drives I want to install Win 2000 but the CD Rom is dead...so booting from CD will be inefectual.

I have an external cd/dvd writer/reader....would the machine look on the dvd for boot instructions automaticaly if I just connected it up and disconnected/uninstalled the dead CD rom?

Thank you.

I don't think it will, as BIOS doesn't "power-up" USB devices until an operating system is loading.

In which case I will have to install a new CD rom drive...yes?

But doesnt an operating system have to be installed in order to get such things recognised by the machine.

A case of chicken and egg.

Any suggestions as to how I should proceed?

Many thanks

You will need to install a new cd-rom drive. The BIOS recognises it, so not having a Operating System installed doesn't make any difference.
