Hi all . i've just bought an external case and harddrive to expand my laptop. It's a toshiba laptop and a ibm/hitachi 250 gb hardrive.

I've screwed it all toghther correctly installed it and and updated the drivers.

I cant see the drive at all.

Under device manager it says not intialized?

Anyone help please?

Are you on XP / 2k?

Right click my computer

choose manage

then diskmanagement

from there you should be able to partition / format it.

What connection is it ? USB? firewire? etc.

The drive jumper as to be set to master and you have to create a Primary Partition on it before you can use it

its usb 2.0 , the master switch is on the drive itself right? won't have to be set as slave so my hardrive in the laptop is the master?

it's xp home

Yes your Laptop is set to master but the USB as got to have it's jumper set to master. It goes through the USB PCI path not EIDE path
