I HAD TO REINSTALL XP ON MY COMPUTER EARLIER THIS WEEK AND INITIALLY THE COMPUTER SHOWED MY EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE/MEDIA PLAYER AND THEN IT VANISHED FROM MY COMPUTER FOLDER.
AFTER MOVING IT FROM ONE USB PORT TO DIFFERENT ONES, STILL DIDNT SHOW.
IF I SWITCHED THE EX HARD DRIVE ON AND OFF IT COULD SHOW, BUT IF I ACCESSED A FOLDER ON IT IT SUDDENLY VANISHED AGAIN.
TRIED TO UPDATE DRIVERS BUT WHEN ITS NOT SHOWING ON COMPUTER DONT KNOW IF IM DOING THE RIGHT THING OR NOT.I'D APPRECIATE SOME HELP PLEASE.

I think you may have the stntax wrong, if your External drive letter is E:
At the command prompt you would type chkdsk E:/r and hit Enter

If you go into Disk Management ("Start > Run", type DISKMGMT.MSC and click OK) is the drive shown?

Until the drive is displayed in Windows Explorer with a drive letter, you won't be able to run Checkdisk on it.

When you have the drive showing in disk management then move to command prompt:

Start>Run>type word cmd
type drive letter of the external drive followed by a colon eg E:

now type chkdsk /r
note there's a space between chkdsk and the /

for reference
/f - fixes errors on the disk
/r - Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information (implies /f too)

Not sure if I am reading the problem right.

Unplug the external drive then power down the PC. Next plug the external drive in and re-boot the PC.
You should then see your external drive in my computer and hopefully work OK.

chkdsk can take some time to complete. How patient were you how long did you leave it?

Disconnect the drive.

click here download and unistall usbdeview uninstall all usb devices shown not connected.

close usbdeview plug in your drive and windows will find it as new hardware and reinstall it.

See if it shows up in My computer and stays there
