Have a Maxtor external hard drive. Customer wants a file installed on thier pc (35Mb).

The machine is win 98.

I ahve installed the drivers for the drive but it doesnt show up in My Computer which would enable me to install the file.

Im able to click the icon on the Tasbar remove the drive safely.

Any ideas

Is this USB. If so, there's only very limited support for USB on WIn 98, and this oculd be your problem. For safety, you need 98SE or better.

I have transferred data from win 98SE to XP using an external HDD I made up but found I needed to load USB
Drivers before I could see the drive in Windows 98SE

Has your client previously been using his USB Socket and can he still use it?

Is your Maxtor formatted as NTFS or Fat32?

Windows 98se is a bit iffy about drives over a specific size, unless the BIOS is amended.

I am not sufficiently knowledgeable to do more than prompt the little grey cells, but maybe one of these will put you on the right track.
