external drive

I have bought an western digital 1tb my book home edition external drive and a Trust IF-3600 eSATA II PCIe card an eSATA CABLE. tHE DRIVE works in USB but not in ESATA, it is not recognised. A 320 gb MEDION external hard drive works ok on eSATA. Why won`t the WD drive work in eSATA.

When you connect the drive, does windows pick the drive up? I think size is the determining factor

No windows will not recignise it at all. Tried a 320 gb MEDION external hard drive on eSATA and it worked ok.

Is your motherboard SATA compatible?

  springbob 21:33 22 Dec 08

Yes it`s pci-express with a eSATA controller card
which is a TRUST IF-3600eSATAII PCIe card. It works with a MEDION 320GB eSATA EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE. So it must be compatible.

How is the drive formatted?

  springbob 22:21 22 Dec 08

The drive is FAT32 Format. It worked on usb2 at first until I got the eSATA CARD .

Was the full 1TB avail on USB with Fat32.

I am pretty sure it should be formatted NTFS!

  springbob 11:31 23 Dec 08

In the drives properties It shows 931gb. I will find out how to reformat to ntfs and try it again.

To convert a volume to NTFS from the command prompt

Open Command Prompt.

Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.

In the command prompt window, type: convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs

For example, typing convert D: /fs:ntfs would format drive D: with the ntfs format. You can convert FAT or FAT32 volumes to NTFS with this command.
